GESUALDO

Gesualdo, our starting point, is a place steeped in history. The Castle, which was the residence of the madrigalist prince Carlo Gesualdo, remains the guardian of a millenary history. From Lombard origins to the present day, it tells us about characters, events and events, art and music. Even today, from above, he observes Irpinia and outlines its shape.

The historic center clings to the hill, and becomes part of it. Alleys, palaces, churches, fountains, houses, squares and stairways allow paths immersed in stone and architecture, suddenly opening up into infinite glimpses and panoramas.

A fertile land rich in water, it expands towards the Fredane valley to the south-west and towards the Ufita valley to the north-east

FONTANAROSA

Further down, towards the Fredane valley, not too far from Gesualdo, we find Fontanarosa. The town represents the classic center of the southern Apennines, where in addition to the typical territorial and urban characteristics, the social, everyday one relating to people and traditions is clearly visible. Strong is the link with the tradition of the Tirata del Carro; faith, identity and craftsmanship enclosed in a huge handmade straw obelisk. Fontanarosano craftsmanship is based on local resources. In addition to the straw, stone has also been worked here for centuries, a cornerstone of our paths. In addition to the straw, stone has also been worked here for centuries, a cornerstone of our paths.

TAURASI

Surrounded by Aglianico vineyards, the village of Taurasi has forever linked its name to wine. In fact, this is where the production area of one of the most important and appreciated red wine DOCGs in Italy takes its name. The historic center, with its Castle, also linked to the figure of Prince Carlo Gesualdo, and its driveway is welcoming, articulated and full of a history waiting to be discovered. ROCCA SAN FELICE

The village of Rocca San Felice has a unique charm. Gathered at the foot of its Lombard fortress, like a time machine, it takes the visitor’s imagination to distant times. The surrounding woods are still those told in fairy tales and are protected by the goddess Mefite.

Lake Mefite, mentioned in Virgil’s Aeneid and described as the gateway to Hell for its sulphurous exhalations, characterizes the Valle D’Ansanto and the entire vegetation. Here, in fact, the pastures of the area, imbued with these exhalations, allow the production of a sheep’s cheese unique in the world, the Carmasciano.

SANT’ANGELO DEI LOMBARDI

The village of Longobard origin of Sant’Angelo dei Lombardi is testimony of the urban evolution, of the hand of man and of the history that derives from it.

The castle and the cathedral stand parallel on two nearby hills giving us a still image of the 12th century and of the struggle between temporal and spiritual power.

In the valley below, in the peace of the woods and meadows in a sort of mystical silence, lies the Abbey of Goleto. This monastery, built in the 12th century by San Guglielmo da Vercelli, is one of the most important places in Irpina history and is a destination for pilgrims and visitors.

AECLANUM

Between the Fredane and Calore valleys, the city of Aeclanum was born. The site, already inhabited by the Samnites, becomes in the third century. BC one of the most important Roman cities in this area and then became a colony under the emperor Hadrian in 120 AD

Walking along millenary paved streets between spas, walls, domus and shops, all immersed in nature, allows our imagination to relive the everyday life of the people who lived in this center.

BONITO

Those who live in a place do so by leaving traces or better footprints. Impronte is the name given to a 2016 street art exhibition held in Bonito, a small village in the Ufita valley, and from this review the murals have become the main attraction for this center. Street art takes on a social function and like history or a tradition, it generates a sense of belonging, of identity. Today in Bonito it is possible to admire dozens of murals and one of these is considered among the most beautiful in the world.
